Enzyme Power

By D.J. Dill

This article is introductory to a series of articles relating to the powerful effects of digestive enzyme supplementation. Enzyme therapy is now being used to treat a number of ailments including allergies, obesity, pancreatic hypertrophy, ulcers, infections, candida and more. This article relates mainly to the successful treatment of chronic inflammation with enzyme therapy.

Medical reports dating back to the 1930’s as well as Dr. Edward Howell’s book “Enzyme Nutrition, the Food Enzyme Concept” (1985) validate today’s discoveries. Medical practitioners are beginning to recognize the body’s special nutritional needs in cases of chronic inflammation.

Inflammation is a natural process of the body’s protective response to injury and/or excessive amounts of toxins at the site of an injury. This process usually exceeds what is necessary. The cause of chronic inflammation has to do with the presence of an undigested food substance (usually protein), which is blocking the normal fluid exchange process at the site of an injury. In order to dissolve this blockage, relieve the symptoms and increase the rate of healing, a specific enzymatic reaction must occur.

In realizing this information, one might ask “Why are there undigested food particles floating around in the body in the first place?” The very presence of these undigested substances at the site of inflammation suggests that an incomplete digestion of food has occurred and that there is a deficiency of digestive enzymes in the body. The presence of certain enzymes in the body plays an extremely important role in maintaining proper health because no biochemical reaction in the body can occur without enzymes.

A person can swallow lots of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and protein supplements, but without enzymes, nothing works. How do we determine whether we are getting enough enzymes in our diet? The presence of chronic inflammation, as well as other conditions like allergies, ulcers, chronic fatigue, cellulite deposits and obesity, high cholesterol, candida, dermatitis, psoriasis, raw vegetable intolerance, and a score of other symptoms, are all strong indicators of a digestive enzyme deficiency.

The clinical nutrition research of digestive enzyme therapy using amylase, protease, cellulase, lipase, papain and bromelain has repeatedly shown significant reductions of excess fluid accumulation (edema), redness, heat, swelling and pain in the injured areas. The overall healing of bruises, sprains, strains and contusions takes place in half the normal time in most cases when supplemental digestive enzymes are consumed.

The main reason enzyme deficiencies are so common is because enzymes are very heat sensitive, even more so than vitamins. Enzymes are the first thing to be destroyed by cooking, pasteurization, canning, microwaving or heating foods above 118 degrees Fahrenheit. The vast majority of the American diet includes eating these cooked and processed foods, as opposed to eating raw fruits and vegetables. Replacing the enzymes that were lost from cooking and processing foods is becoming recognized as a vital method of health maintenance.

As mentioned, protease along with certain other enzymes are being used to treat surgical and accident trauma involving soft tissue injuries because, they digest (dissolve) the protein substances which are blocking the normal exchange of fluid at the injured area. Lipase is another enzyme needed to reduce inflammation because it increases the permeability of the cells, thus allowing delivery of nutrients and the excretion of wastes.

Protease is also known to treat excess alkalinity in the body, as well as chronic infections, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, degenerative disc problems, bone spurs and other related disorders such as sciatica and ligament problems. Oral supplementation of digestive enzymes plays a key role in successfully treating these disorders of the spine.

There are many enzyme formulas found in health food stores, however, the amounts of effective enzymes are relatively low in comparison to a recent formulation by Dr. Robert Green and Paul Gaylon of Herbal Products and Development. Their food enzyme product called “Power Plus” has eleven potent enzymes along with synergistic mineral cofactors in amounts never seen before. This formula is four times more potent than any health food store product.

“POWER PLUS” Food Enzymes full spectrum, high potency, plant source, 500mg vegetable capsules – 200 capsules (33 day supply). This product is all vegetable, preservative free, starch free, wheat free, and dairy free. Persons with stomach, duodenal ulcers or biliary stasis should consult a health care professional before taking this product.

Formula Information

Holistic healing is both utterly simple and yet quite complex. The simplicity lies in the fact that the body wants to achieve a state of well being and once given the ability to do so will correct itself. The complexity lies in how to achieve that transformation. Over and over again, I found the failing of holistic medicine to be that certain strategies didn’t deliver the needed impact and consistency to sustain deep and ongoing constitutional changes. One would make a bit of headway and then revert back. Without writing a book on holistic medicine I can jump to the last chapter- what actually works. In a nutshell, one needs to shift and alter the entire energetic matrix of the body and sustain that shift. The key is repetition until the body gets it. The body’s tendency is to revert to its old patterns. Many have made great efforts through natural healing to overcome an illness and yet they fundamentally don’t change. Why don’t they succeed? They haven’t altered the energy system of the body. Young people although horribly abusive can remain relatively healthy. Why? Their energy system is still in a relatively vital state.

Energy Enzyme Blend For Digestive Distress is energy food. Its main forte is to act like a mini acupuncture treatment every time you take it. One aspect of our formula is that it has a phenomenal surface area and a very powerful negative charge. This actually jump starts the body back to its proper polarity. But what is most exciting is that microbial and disease can not thrive when the energy system is balanced and vital. Acupuncture, in theory, tries to achieve this goal but what is missing is the consistency aspect, as most cannot afford the number of treatments to maintain sustained results.

This formula exceeds at drawing and trapping environmental toxins from chemicals to heavy metals. This process is called chelation. Once a toxin is trapped, it is no longer exposed to the body. These toxins are safely eliminated from the body without aggravation. Most chelation products do not remove the exposure of the toxic agent during removal and therefore the process of detoxifying the body can cause unwanted aggravations. Our formulas will also eliminate intestinal parasites. In my practice, I always encourage my clients to develop a home program of energy work. If you can consistently shift the body’s energy system day in and day out you have overcome a key hurdle in achieving true health. The second hurdle is the elimination of toxins. Once again, a vital and balanced energy system is a “get lost” notice to microbial organisms and disease. Adding the fact that our formulas are superb chelators for environmental toxins, they become the one two punch necessary for detoxifying the body. So now you have two key factors in creating true health: You are balancing the energy system on an ongoing basis and you are eliminating toxins from the body without the harsh side effects that other cleansing programs can cause.

Energy Enzyme Blend is intended for daily use and is best taken several times a day. With the first dose, you begin the journey towards cleansing your body and rebalancing your energy system. This formula is a foundational tool for making fundamental changes. Each person’s tool kit will vary depending on their health issues. I design comprehensive programs for my clients but the goal is the same: to re-establish the vital life force.

This product has not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat cure or prevent any disease.

Aloe Vera

Nature’s Potentizer

Aloe vera has a long, well-known reputation as the all-purpose “miracle” plant. But to ensure that its potency is preserved, it is essential that proper handling, preparation, and processing are considered. We use a whole leaf aloe vera, certified organic, in liquid form that is produced by the “orchestra concept” method—that is, each step in production has an equally important role. The liquid whole leaf aloe captures the rich mucilage material under the rind which contains over 200 biologically active constituents. A few of the rich components are vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, and glycoproteins. Notably, there are 10,000 - 13,000 milligrams per liter of mucopolysaccharides, which are classified as complex carbohydrates.

There are so many benefits of whole leaf aloe vera that we will only highlight them here, with many cross-referencing with each other:

Aloe vera has been called the first aid plant. Topically used, it is very helpful with wounds, cuts, scrapes, and burns—whether it be sunburn or heat burn, providing, in addition, soothing pain relief. It penetrates the skin by rehydration, increasing solubility, allowing wound healing components to be absorbed. It encourages general cell growth as well as collagen production, therefore helps to accelerate wound healing. Aloe vera is also used by hospitals for the internal wounds suffered by soldiers in the battlefield. It has a dental application both in temporary infection prevention and cleaning maintenance. Aloe vera is antipathogenic, having antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiamoebic properties, so, therefore, aids against a whole multitude of infectious diseases. Countless topical skin, facial, and hair formulas contain aloe vera.

With the use of whole leaf aloe vera, the immune system, aided by the liver, increases macrophage activity, which engulfs and destroys infected and damaged cells and foreign proteins. Aloe vera, therefore, aids in fighting inflammation, stimulating new, healthy cell growth. It has an immunomodulating effect on the immune system, meaning, it helps the immune system in responding appropriately to changing internal conditions. Aloe contains cinnamic acid, a proteolytic enzyme that helps in the digestion of foreign protein and undigested food traveling in the bloodstream. This, then, helps alleviate extra stress on the immune system by taking away toxic burden on the liver. It benefits gastrointestinal conditions by decreasing the permeability of intestinal membranes so that waste material does not leak out, but nutrients can be absorbed properly.

Aloe also helps the liver in the reduction of cholesterol concentrations and is beneficial in regulating lipid peroxidation. It benefits the heart and circulatory system via its metabolic free radical scavenging activity. Aloe helps regulate blood sugar by relieving oxidative stress and lowering blood sugar levels, so it is beneficial for diabetic conditions. Its enzymatic benefits also include increasing superoxide dismutase and catalase, two antioxidant enzyme nutrients. Aloe also increases the bioavailability of vitamins C & E.

From growing to bottling, it is important that the processing of whole leaf aloe vera preserve the potency of all the 200 plus active components that make it unique. We also use an inner fillet concentrate in our Inflazyme and Supremely Green, and in the mineral co-factors for our probiotic Friendly Colonizer. Whole leaf aloe vera concentrate is available as a liquid in the 1/2 gallon size. The inner fillet concentrate at 200:1 is available in a 100 gm container.

Blue-green algae have gained attention in recent years as the new superfood of the health food market. Often called “wild blue-green” because it grows wild in the pure, fresh waters of Klamath Lake in Oregon, it is a powerhouse of nutrients. These cyanobacteria microalgae are the most primitive of food sources, going back over 3 billion years, yet is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. It is a supreme whole food, a foundational food.

Blue-green algae is a very efficient photosynthesizer. Using only sunlight, carbon dioxide, nitrogen from the air, and hydrogen from water, they synthesize proteins, enzymes, carbohydrates, and lipids. The colloidal mineral sediment of Klamath Lake, measured at depths of 35 feet, makes blue-green extremely rich in minerals, notably high in boron, and essential trace elements. These minerals are in a chelated form meaning they are organically bound and therefore bioavailable. Ounce for ounce, blue-green is one of the richest sources of protein (at 60%) and chlorophyll. It is considered a “complete protein” and contains all eight essential amino acids in a profile that is nearly identical to that required by the human body. Protein is necessary for keeping the immune system healthy. Blue-green is an immune system enhancer. It contains most of the non-essential amino acids and is also rich in B vitamins, particularly B-12, and in vitamins C, E, K, beta carotene, inositol, choline, and biotin.

Blue-green algae are probably best known for their amazing effects on the nervous system. Their ability to metabolize nitrogen directly from the air allows them to produce neuropeptides which are the precursors of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are the chemical link whereby neurons communicate with one another. Blue-green algae are a neural stimulant that most people find quite positive. They help provide sharper mental focus and alertness. They have brain-enhancing qualities that make them a potentially powerful mentally healing food. On subtle levels, they can have spiritually integrating properties. For body and mind, blue-green algae are considered one of Nature’s most potent regenerators.

What makes blue-green different from most algae on the market is that they are harvested in their natural state. Because of the still pristine qualities of Klamath Lake and because blue-green are at the very bottom of the food chain, they are virtually pollution-free which cannot be said of almost all the food that we eat today. These algae, so named because of their typical blue-green color, can actually vary in color from season to season as well as varying in texture and density. Blue-green algae can be mixed with juice or water. Their soft glucose cell wall makes them highly assimilable. This is nutrition in its simplest and most complete form.

Klamath blue-green are harvested from the summer bloom in the middle of the deepest part of Upper Klamath Lake. The greatest purity of blue-green is found there. The clean air, mineral-rich water, and high-intensity sunlight make this a perfect growth medium for these nutrient-dense whole foods. Immediately frozen after harvest, all the blue-green vital nutrients remain intact and biologically active. They are then checked to ensure they are free of Daphne and microcystins and are then freeze-dried.

Byproduct Utilization

A Permaculture Model of Sugar Cane Production in India

We will briefly explore here the industrial application of a way of utilizing materials considered “waste” as a complete part of a byproduct process. Our model of a business using permaculture principles (see permaculture category on www.unifiedcommunity.info) is the Rajshree Sugar Company in India. We will also extrapolate here other permaculture options from their already efficient system.

The byproducts of sugar cane production are numerous, depending on which direction is chosen. After pressing the cane, Rajshree Sugar Co. will use the spent bagasse to produce three types of ethanol; the wind rows of compost (mounds of bagasse) can also go to make six different types of probiotics. These probiotic strains can be further developed and inoculated (with whey, liquid cane, etc.) and have many applications for people, animals, or plants. The spent bagasse is also used as a heating source as well as for stream generation. Tissue culture also provides a more productive, faster way of plant cultivation, which, in turn, provides more bird and wildlife habitat. In addition, spent culture can be a growing medium for medicinal mushrooms, which could then be further used in the composting process.

Many mixed uses can occur with the spent part of the cane. This material can also be a fish food for tilapia or used as a feed stock, or, by shredding the compost, could be used in pressed forms of paper or particle (fiber) board. These obviously provide many offshoots, depending on scale.

Water conservation and catchment systems (such as berming to water plants, causing no erosion) can be utilized in the design process of the property project. Water purification systems have been developed using ph, electrical and magnetic principals. Moreover, there are many natural methods to clean water. For example, ponds grown with water hyacinth can be used to clean.

Other plantings such as perennial fruit trees, vegetables, and herbs local to the area could be cultivated for valuable food and medicinal products. Pesticide use is not necessary as healthy plants thrive. With clean water, gardens can be utilized at factories and watered through channeled streams for landscaping on effective contours.

Such permaculture methods are cheaper, nontoxic, and provide sound sustainable principals, which include food production, conserving land (thus stopping erosion), and creating further use and resources of the same material. This protects the health of the workers, provides several times over more productivity, right livelihood, the superior health of the property, and a much more profitable process.

In our example, sugar and molasses are produced in a multitude of forms as would be the purpose of a sugar company. Natural cane juice would obviously be a healthier alternative to refined sugar, but we have been addressing elements of the design process after the sugar cane is pressed. This example was meant to provide a quick sketch of how many opportunities in the byproduct process could be elaborated in order to provide a completely different paradigm of thinking as well as of prosperity. The key is linking with a team which has the knowledge base of how to do a project with more efficiency, lower cost, and no health risks. This is true economic prosperity.

Coconut Oil

Posted in Articles

Some years ago a negative publicity campaign, initiated by a rival oil industry, was disseminated about coconut oil based on faulty and misleading information. Shortly thereafter, coconut oil began disappearing in the U.S. as an ingredient in foods and food processing. Since coconut oil consists of natural saturated fatty acids, it was wrongly suggested that it raised cholesterol levels, and would, therefore, clog up arteries and lead to heart disease. That is not so. In fact, coconut oil has a profile that leads to an exactly opposite conclusion. It is important to note first of all that not all saturated fatty acids are the same. Whereas long chain saturated fatty acids do get stored as fat in the body, the medium chain and short chain fatty acids do not. Coconut oil consists of the latter–short and especially medium chain fatty acids, and that distinction makes all the difference. Not only have these fatty acids now been accurately shown to have no effect on cholesterol levels but because of their beneficial biochemical activities, they can even improve arterial and heart conditions.

The shorter chain fatty acids of coconut oil are immediately digested and absorbed and are quickly sent to the liver to be used as metabolic fuel. In other words, they do not float through the blood stream as fat globules that go into making fat and thereby clogging up arteries. The fatty acids of coconut oil are metabolized quickly for energy. They help the body’s metabolism burn at a more effective rate, so coconut oil is to be recommended for a weight loss diet and for maintaining optimal weight balance.

Once coconut oil is seriously considered, you find that its benefits are numerous. Its healthful effects on the skin are well-known. Topically, coconut oil can be used as a sun screen, helps to heal cuts and burns, and keeps the skin soft and youthful. It is found to be effective on fungal, including yeast, infections, and also against a whole range of bacterial, viral, and parasite conditions.

Studies on coconut oil have shown it to be helpful in controlling diabetes, in reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease, and to be a strong cancer preventative. It also supports the immune system. Coconut oil improves the absorption of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and amino acids. It is especially effective in the calcium-magnesium cycle, therefore helpful in the prevention of osteoporosis. Coconut oil also benefits the functioning of the thyroid gland, which in turn governs brain development and the production of the protective myelin sheath of nerve cells. Coconut oil also functions as a broad-spectrum antioxidant, which includes its protective and healing properties for the skin.

Coconut oil is considered the most stable of oils. It can be stored at room temperature over long periods of time and show no deterioration and rancidity. Its long shelf life is commonly put at 2-3 years. It has a melting temperature of 76 degrees. Coconut oil is the perfect cooking oil, as it is heat resistant, its stability keeping it from changing into trans-fatty acids, which are now shown to be a definite health hazard. Trans-fatty acids, unfortunately, are now found in most processed and fast foods.

Our organic coconut oil shows an excellent profile: A traditional Philippine extraction method is used to produce an unsurpassed naturally tasting, full-bodied, and distinctively pleasant coconut aroma product. The peoples of the Pacific islands who consume coconuts as a large part of their diet provide radiantly healthful living examples of its wonderful benefits. Coconut oil is reclaiming its title as one of the most widely used and healthiest oils on Earth.
